Nina Peterson
Activity Services Facilitator
Nearly 2 Years as a DSP
In her nearly two years with the company, Nina Peterson has consistently embodied the principles of person-centered thinking, meeting every individual exactly where they are. Her dedication to creating an immersive, inclusive day program makes her an exceptionally deserving candidate for DSP of the Year.
As part of the day program’s focus on total inclusion, Nina has taken ownership of helping participants with kitchen clean-up after lunch, including loading and unloading the dishwasher. She provides support in a calm, respectful manner that prioritizes individual autonomy over rigid efficiency, resisting the urge to take over or correct how dishes are placed. While this approach may use space differently, it successfully encourages active participation and builds confidence.
Nina has also taken wonderful initiative with the “Daily Delight,” a daily activity historically read exclusively by staff while participants simply followed along. She transformed this routine by inviting individuals to lead the reading themselves, patiently supporting those still developing their literacy skills as they attempt every word of the newsletter. Although this extends the activity’s duration, Nina recognizes the profound value of the opportunity, ensuring individuals are truly participating rather than just observing.
Nina’s unwavering commitment to person-centered practices and meaningful inclusion transforms everyday routines into empowering experiences for the individuals she supports, making her a highly deserving nominee for Direct Service Professional of the Year.
